A visit to beautiful Boconnoc

What do you think about bold modern paintings in a traditional drawing room setting in a Georgian country house?

Views were divided over the three that hang in the elegant Boconnoc House, where Barbara Ridge and Sandra James learned that they were brought in by a crew filming The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher – and have stayed ever since.

Twenty members visited the estate near Lostwithiel on a bright and breezy day last week, when they were given a warm welcome by guide Jill and the team working at the house, owned by Anthony and Elizabeth Fortescue.

The Fortescues were determined to restore the dilapidated main house to its former glory, as it had been uninhabited since the 1950s. Jill told us that the restoration project of the house has taken 12 years of hard work with a fantastic team of craftsman and builders. All that attention to detail certainly showed, but the atmosphere is still one of a much loved family home.

Boconnoc was awarded the Historic Houses Association/ Sotheby’s Restoration Award and the Georgian Group 2012 Architectural Award for the Restoration of a Country Mansion. We really felt that Boconnoc House now has a heartbeat again.
